NFL Week 5 Thursday Night: Buccaneers at Cowboys
Winless Tampa Bay takes its real defense and a rookie quarterback into Dallas as a near double-digit dog. The edge tonight is a price, not a prediction. Our best bet, the read, and the risks.
Slate at a glance
One game tonight: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4) at Dallas Cowboys (2-2), 6:15pm CST at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, roof decision about 90 minutes before kickoff. The US market sits around Dallas minus 8.5; the total is 47.5 to 48.5. Our lean is Tampa Bay with the points in a game played in the mid 40s, and the best bet is Tampa Bay plus 9.5.
The headline edge tonight is a price, not a forecast. Both Mexican books are a half point to a full point behind the US market on the spread. Our football read leans the same way, but on its own it would not clear the bar. The other two picks are small, correlated leans and are sized that way.
The read
The number opened at Dallas minus 10 and has been bet down toward minus 8.5 in the US even though a clear majority of spread tickets are on Dallas. That is sharper money on Tampa Bay moving the line against the public, and both Mexican books have not fully followed it.
Tampa Bay. The offense is the worst in football by EPA per play (32nd) with a 38.9 percent success rate and a red zone touchdown rate of 41.7 percent (31st). An undrafted rookie makes his second start behind a line that has allowed sacks on 12.7 percent of dropbacks, the worst rate in the league. Their starting quarterback, a safety, a corner and a linebacker are all out. What keeps Tampa Bay in games is the defense: 4th in EPA per play allowed, 39.5 percent success allowed, 3rd against the run (78.5 yards per game), and every one of the four losses came by 7 points or fewer.
Dallas. The opposite profile. The offense is 5th by EPA, converts 51 percent of third downs and 81.3 percent of red zone trips, and CeeDee Lamb leads the league in catches and receiving yards. The defense is last by EPA, allows 52.2 percent success and 150 rushing yards per game, and is without a starting corner and a starting linebacker. A left guard just activated from injured reserve could make his season debut.
Lean: Dallas wins, most likely by a touchdown to 10, in a game played around 27 to 19. At plus 9.5 we get most of that range.
Caveat: Tampa Bay has failed to cover 13 straight games, and a rookie quarterback with two interceptions in his only start, behind the league's leakiest pass protection, is exactly how a 9 point game becomes a 20 point game. One short field off a turnover and this card is in trouble.
The numbers
Both teams are on a short week after Sunday games, and Tampa Bay travels. Tampa Bay's offensive numbers mostly belong to three starts from their injured quarterback and one rookie start.
| Through 4 games | TB | DAL |
|---|---|---|
| Record / ATS | 0-4 / 0-4 | 2-2 / 3-1 |
| Points per game for / against | 19.0 / 24.0 | 30.5 / 28.0 |
| Offensive EPA per play (rank) | -0.20 (32nd) | +0.12 (5th) |
| Defensive EPA per play allowed (rank) | -0.12 (4th) | +0.16 (32nd) |
| Third down, offense / allowed | 34.6% / 32.7% | 51.0% / 52.3% |
| Red zone TD %, offense | 41.7% (31st) | 81.3% (3rd) |
| Rushing yards per game, offense / allowed | 106.0 / 78.5 | 89.5 / 150.3 |
| Sacks allowed | 16 (12.7% of dropbacks, 32nd) | 6 |
| Turnover margin | -5 | 0 |
Our read: this is a top 5 offense against the 4th best defense, and the worst offense against the worst defense. Those two mismatches pull the margin in opposite directions, which is why nearly every projection lands on about 9. The number that cuts against us is Tampa Bay's sack rate: Dallas' pass rush is weak, but a rookie taking sacks on one dropback in eight drives into punts and turnovers. We trust the defensive efficiency over Tampa Bay's 0-4 record against the spread, because four games of those results are noise, but the protection problem is real and it is the thing to watch in the first quarter.
Model split
| Source | Projected score | Win % DAL | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| An algorithmic model | DAL 28, TB 19 | 79.2% | 47 |
| A second statistical model | DAL 28, TB 19 | 79% | 47 |
| A third projection | DAL 28, TB 20 | n/a | 48 |
| Market (de-vigged, two books) | about DAL 29, TB 19.5 | 80.4% | 48.5 |
| thegoal | DAL 27, TB 19 | 78% | 46 |
On the margin, the models and the market agree at about 9 and we sit a point lower, on the matchup (Tampa Bay's defense against a Dallas run game averaging 89.5 yards) plus the reverse line movement. It is not a strong reason, which is why the side rests on the price, not on our margin. On the total, the models sit slightly under the 48.5 both books hang, and we are lower still at 46; Dallas going over in 10 straight games is the fixture evidence against us.
Best 3 bets
1. Tampa Bay plus 9.5, -110 (best price), confidence: high. Our estimate is 54.5 percent against a fair 50.0 percent at this line, about plus 2.5 points against the US-adjusted fair. The most repeatable edge in our process is a local book lagging a US move, and this is a full point of it. The football supports the same side: a top 4 defense by EPA that has kept all four losses within 7, a Dallas run game that cannot salt the game away, and a projected margin near 9. Against it: Tampa Bay is 0-4 against the spread and has failed to cover 13 straight, and 10 is a key number that beats plus 9.5. Only valid at plus 9.5; at plus 9 the edge is gone.
2. Under 48.5, -110, confidence: low. Our estimate is 53 percent. The worst offense in football, scoring 19 a game, against a slate of projections at 47 to 48. Most of the bets and money are on the over and the total has not climbed, which hints bigger money sits under. Against it: Dallas has gone over in 10 straight, its defense is last in the league, and the rookie runs, so a chase script can push it over.
3. Dak Prescott under 272.5 passing yards, -115, confidence: low. Our estimate is 55 percent. Prescott averages 266 yards, the line sits above that, and a Dallas lead means a second half of runs. Against it: Tampa Bay's secondary is missing two starters, Prescott threw for 335 last week, and if Tampa Bay scores early this goes over by the third quarter.
Correlation note: all three cash most easily if Dallas does not run away with it. A 34-17 Dallas win loses all three; a 27-20 Dallas win very likely cashes all three. Treat them as one position, combined risk no more than 1.5 units.
Best bet of the day
Tampa Bay Buccaneers plus 9.5 at -110. The US market has moved from 10 to 8.5 against the public; one Mexican book has not. That full point is the edge. Behind it sits a defense ranked 4th by EPA that has kept every loss within a touchdown, against a Dallas offense that wins through the air but cannot run. Our estimate is 54.5 percent against a 50.0 percent fair price at this line. The caveat: the edge is mostly the number. At plus 9 or worse it disappears, 10 is a landing spot that beats us, and a rookie quarterback with the league's worst sack rate is the most likely way to lose this ticket by 20.
Before you bet
Confirm inactives, which come out about 90 minutes before kickoff, including the Dallas left guard and Tampa Bay's offensive line. Take the side only at plus 9.5 or better, never at plus 9. Re-check the total and the Prescott line before staking, and never chase a moved number to lock a pick in.
