NFL Week 4 Breakdown: Dogs Bark, Quarterbacks Limp
Seven underdogs won outright again, four 345 yard passers all lost, and Jackson, Chase, Barkley and Mariota got hurt. What happened, how our Week 3 calls held up, and what to watch in Week 5.
The short version
Seven underdogs won outright for the second week in a row. New England went into Buffalo as a 6.5 point dog and won 29-26. Carolina beat Detroit on Sunday night behind 14 catches for 192 yards from Tetairoa McMillan. Dallas erased a 16-6 halftime hole in Houston, Jacksonville won in Cincinnati, and on Monday night Atlanta beat New Orleans 45-24 as a short road dog.
Three teams are still perfect (Kansas City, Minnesota, San Francisco), five are winless (Houston, the Chargers, Miami, Tampa Bay, Tennessee), and the injury list that came out of this week will move Week 5 lines more than any result: Lamar Jackson's ankle, Ja'Marr Chase's concussion, Saquon Barkley's hamstring and Marcus Mariota's knee.
The other story is quieter. Last week we said turnovers were writing the standings. This week they mostly did not, and several of the teams we flagged as lucky kept winning anyway. We grade our own Week 3 calls further down.
Week 4 by the numbers
| Metric | Week 4 | Season (Weeks 1 to 4) |
|---|---|---|
| Points per game | 47.75 (764 total) | 46.2 |
| Overs / unders | 9-6, 1 push | About 32-31-1 |
| Favorites straight up | 9-7 | 41-23 |
| Favorites against the spread | 6-10 | 29-35 |
| Home teams against the spread | 7-9 | 32-32 |
| Outright underdog wins | 7 (CLE, NYG, DAL, JAX, NE, CAR, ATL) | 23 in 64 games |
| Games decided by one score (8 or fewer) | 11 of 16 | |
| Games decided by 3 or fewer | 4 (CLE, GB, NE, KC) | |
| Winners that won the turnover battle | 6 of 15 with full box data (Week 3: 10 of 15) |
Against the spread and over/under counts use the consensus closing line. Tennessee at Baltimore landed exactly on a closing total of 42 (a push); at books that closed 42.5 it was an under. Washington is counted as the home team in London.
Five storylines that matter
1. Underdogs keep covering, and the market is slow to adjust
Favorites are 41-23 straight up this season, so the better team still usually wins. Against the spread it is the other way around: dogs are about 35-29, and Weeks 3 and 4 both finished 6-10 for favorites. Seven outright upsets in each of the last two weeks is a lot.
Our read: 64 games is not enough to call this a law. A 35-29 split is well within what a coin produces over a sample this size. What it does say is that "lay the points with the better team" has not been a free lunch in 2026, and that a short dog with a real quarterback (Dallas +2.5, Jacksonville +2.5, Atlanta +1.5 this week) deserves a look before you assume the line is right.
2. Monster passing days, in losses
Four quarterbacks threw for 345 yards or more on Sunday. All four lost.
| Quarterback | Yards | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Burrow, CIN | 428 | Lost 22-17 to JAX |
| Jared Goff, DET | 412 | Lost 32-26 at CAR |
| Kirk Cousins, LV | 365 | Lost 30-27 to KC |
| C.J. Stroud, HOU | 347 | Lost 34-30 to DAL |
Big yardage often comes from playing from behind, against defenses that are happy to give up the short stuff and keep everything in front of them. If you bet passing yard overs, the game script matters as much as the quarterback: a 400 yard day is often a sign that his team spent the second half chasing.
3. Turnovers took a week off
Last week, winners won the turnover battle in 10 of 15 games. This week it was 6 of 15, with 6 even and 3 games won by the team that turned it over more. The Bears gave the ball away twice and still beat the Jets by 11, because they outgained them 492 to 157. The Rams won 24-20 in Philadelphia with two giveaways and zero for the Eagles, because Philadelphia gained 172 yards all day.
That is what normal football looks like: the team that moves the ball usually wins, and turnovers decide the close ones. Week 3 was the outlier, and it is why records built mostly on takeaways deserve suspicion.
4. The injury bill came due
- Lamar Jackson (BAL) hurt his ankle late in the first half against Tennessee and left in a walking boot. Baltimore led 24-7 at the time and did not score again. Reports give him an outside chance to play in Week 5, and the Sunday night line at Atlanta fell about 2.5 points on the news.
- Ja'Marr Chase (CIN) is in the concussion protocol, and Tee Higgins (groin) is day to day. The Cincinnati at Miami total dropped about 3.5 points.
- Saquon Barkley (PHI) is week to week with a hamstring injury, and backup Tank Bigsby needs surgery. The Eagles' London line moved by 1 to 3 points.
- Marcus Mariota (WAS) sprained his MCL in London, and a third string quarterback finished a 30-13 loss. Washington expects Jayden Daniels back for Week 5.
- Kansas City lost WR Tyquan Thornton to a dislocated ankle (likely for the season) in the same game where he caught 5 passes for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Rashee Rice left with a hamstring injury.
5. Minnesota is 4-0 and did not score a touchdown
The Vikings beat Miami 15-10 on five field goals. Their defense is the best in the league by efficiency, their offense is in the bottom five, and they are +5 in turnover margin. Miami covered as a 9.5 point dog. Minnesota is a good team, but its record is better than its football, and the next few opponents are better than Miami.
Last week's calls, graded
We said we would hold ourselves to what we wrote. Here is how the Week 3 breakdown aged.
| What we said in Week 3 | What happened in Week 4 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Las Vegas is the top regression candidate | Lost 30-27 to KC, but covered +5.5. Turnover margin cooled from +5 to +3 and they still played well | Half right. The record cracked, the team did not |
| Minnesota's 3-0 is built on defense and turnovers | Won 15-10 without a touchdown, did not cover -9.5 | Right on the process, wrong on the result. Still unbeaten |
| Denver's comeback win hid a bottom 10 offense | Lost 24-14 at SF; 14 points | Right |
| The Giants' 2-1 is thin | Beat Arizona 36-24 as a dog, three Jameis Winston touchdown passes | Wrong. A pick six and +3 turnovers helped, but they earned this one |
| Cleveland's 2-1 is thin (negative point differential) | Beat Pittsburgh 27-24 on a 56 yard field goal at the end | Wrong on the result. Still -14 in point differential at 3-1 |
| Philadelphia is priced like a contender and playing like it is not | Blew a 20-10 halftime lead, 172 total yards, 0-4 against the spread | Right |
| "Do not bet the injury headline, bet the price" (backups won in Week 3) | The market's quarterback downgrades held up this week: Tampa Bay's rookie lost a 17-14 game that stayed far under, and Washington's third stringer lost by 17 | The rule held; the Week 3 pattern did not. Last week the market overreacted; this week it priced them about right |
| GB at TB: was the 7 point drop in the total too much? | 31 points against a total of 39 | No. The market was right |
The five teams on our regression watchlist went 3-2 straight up and 3-2 against the spread, so betting against them would have lost money this week. The flags describe teams whose results may fade over a season, not teams to fade every Sunday.

| LAR @ PHI | LAR 24, PHI 20 | LAR -3.5, 42.5 | LAR | Over (44) | Eagles led 20-10 at the half, then managed almost nothing. Stafford 317, Puka Nacua 125 |

| DET @ CAR (SNF) | CAR 32, DET 26 | DET -4.5, 52 | CAR | Over (58) | McMillan 14 for 192. Chuba Hubbard 122 rushing. Goff 412 in a loss |
| ATL @ NO (MNF) | ATL 45, NO 24 | NO -1.5, 47.5 | ATL | Over (69) | 24-7 at the half. Bijan Robinson 145 rushing. Atlanta has 35 and 45 points in two Penix starts |
Some books closed SEA -7 (a push) and TEN @ BAL at 42.5 (an under).
Standings snapshot
| AFC | NFC | |
|---|---|---|
| 4-0 | Kansas City | Minnesota, San Francisco |
| 0-4 | Houston, LA Chargers, Miami, Tennessee | Tampa Bay |
Best point differentials: SF +58, JAX +51, CHI +47, KC +41, MIN +35. Worst: MIA -55, LAC -39, WAS -34, GB -32, ARI -30.
Records that do not match the point differential: Cleveland is 3-1 at -14. The Giants are 3-1 at +3. Chicago is 3-1 at +47 and might be better than its record says, with a backup quarterback.
Stock up, stock down
Stock up
- San Francisco. 4-0, best point differential in football, and the most efficient offense by a distance. The defensive line is banged up (Nick Bosa out again), which is the only reason for caution.
- Jacksonville. +51, won in Cincinnati, a London favorite this week. The best turnover margin in the league (+6) is the one flag.
- Chicago. Two straight wins with backup quarterbacks, a 30 carry rushing day, and a defense that held the Jets to 157 yards.
- Atlanta. 35 and 45 points in two games with Michael Penix Jr. The 2-2 record includes two losses with a different quarterback.
- Carolina. Beat Detroit, Bryce Young threw for 329, and McMillan looks like a true number one receiver. On bye this week.
Stock down
- Philadelphia. 0-4 against the spread, a 172 yard game at home, and now no Barkley. The market is finally adjusting.
- Baltimore. 3-1, but 1-3 against the spread, and everything depends on Jackson's ankle. Lost CB Marlon Humphrey and TE Durham Smythe in the same game.
- Houston. 0-4 with an elite defense by success rate. The offense keeps finding ways to lose close games.
- LA Chargers. 0-4, 0-4 against the spread, four turnovers in Seattle, and now without their left tackle.
- Buffalo. First loss of the season, at home, as a 6.5 point favorite, to a division rival. The defense is still below average.
What Week 4 taught us for betting
- Short dogs are worth a look. Dogs are about 35-29 against the spread this season. Not a system, but enough to stop assuming the favorite's number is fair.
- The market can get quarterback changes right, too. Week 3 rewarded fading the panic. Week 4 rewarded trusting it. The edge, when there is one, is the size of the move, never the injury itself.
- 400 yard passers lose. Passing volume often means trailing. Price yard props with the game script in mind.
- Totals are running over the number. Two straight weeks near 48 points per game, and games beat their closing totals by about 2.6 points this week. The season split is still close to even, so this is a trend to watch, not a reason to bet every over.
- Regression flags are season-long, not weekly. The teams on our watchlist went 3-2 against the spread. A flag means the price may be too high over time, not that the team loses on Sunday.
- Key numbers kept deciding games. Four games were decided by three points or fewer, and Seattle won by exactly 7 against a 6.5 to 7 point line. Shop for the best side of 3 and 7.
Injury and quarterback news heading into Week 5

Week 5 games to watch
Byes: Kansas City, Carolina. Lines are the US market as of Monday and Tuesday, October 5 and 6, and will move. Kickoff times are Mexico City time.
| Game | Kickoff (CDMX) | Spread | Total | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TB @ DAL | Thu 18:15 | DAL -9.5 to -10 | 47.5 | Dallas has the worst defense in football by efficiency and is a near double digit favorite. Tampa's defense is real |
| PHI @ JAX (London) | Sun 7:30 | JAX -4.5 to -5.5 | 42.5 to 43.5 | Opened 3.5. How much of the move is Barkley, and how much is the market finally pricing the Eagles? |
| CIN @ MIA | Sun 11:00 | CIN -7.5 | 42 to 42.5 | Everything waits on Chase and Higgins |
| CHI @ GB | Sun 11:00 | CHI -2.5 to -3 | 44.5 | A backup quarterback is a road favorite at Lambeau, and the line sits on the key number of 3 |
| LV @ NE | Sun 11:00 | NE -3.5 | 44.5 to 45.5 | The Raiders are 4-0 against the spread. The Patriots just won in Buffalo |
| SF @ SEA | Sun 14:25 | SEA -2.5 to -3 | 46.5 to 47.5 | The best offense against one of the best defenses, with SF's pass rush thinned out |
| BAL @ ATL (SNF) | Sun 18:20 | BAL -3.5 | 45.5 to 46.5 | A Jackson line. If he is ruled out, it can fall through 3. If he plays, it should climb back toward 6 |
| BUF @ LAR (MNF) | Mon 18:15 | LAR -2.5 | 53.5 | The Super Bowl favorite in the market hosts a Bills team coming off its first loss. Highest total of the week |
Survivor corner: the safest favorite of Week 5 is Dallas at home against Tampa Bay, around 80% to win once the bookmaker margin is removed, with little value in saving them for later. Cincinnati at Miami (about 75%) carries an extra risk: most pools lock before the final injury report, so you would be picking without knowing whether Chase and Higgins play. Houston at Tennessee is the third option, at a little over 70%. Expect Dallas to be the most popular pick of the week. In a large pool, that is the argument for going the other way.
Method: final scores and box score data checked against at least two independent sources. Closing spreads and totals are the US consensus close; where books closed at different numbers, both are noted. Efficiency figures (EPA per play, success rate) come from public play by play models through Week 4. Win probabilities are moneylines with the bookmaker margin removed. This is analysis, not a guarantee: past results do not predict future ones. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
