NFL Week 3 Breakdown: The Week the Backups Won
Mariota, Keenum and Penix all won outright as underdogs, seven dogs won in total, and almost half of this week's winners were outgained. What happened, what it means, and what to watch in Week 4.
The short version
Week 3 punished anyone who bet on the depth chart. Marcus Mariota beat the defending champion Seahawks as an 8.5 point underdog. Case Keenum, 38 years old and without a start since December 2023, walked into Monday Night Football and beat the Eagles 27-7. Michael Penix Jr., in his first start back from a torn ACL, watched Bijan Robinson run for 194 yards as Atlanta won 35-14 at Lambeau.
Seven underdogs won outright. Scoring jumped back to 47.3 points per game. Five teams are 3-0, five are 0-3, and almost half of this week's winners were outgained by the team they beat. That last number is the one we would underline: plenty of 2026 records are running ahead of the football underneath them.
Week 3 by the numbers
| Metric | Week 3 | Season (Weeks 1 to 3) |
|---|---|---|
| Points per game | 47.3 (756 total) | 45.7 (Week 1: 49.4, Week 2: 40.4) |
| Overs / unders | 8-8 | 23-25 |
| Favorites straight up | 9-7 | 32-16 |
| Favorites against the spread | 6-10 | 23-25 |
| Home teams straight up | 11-5 | |
| Outright underdog wins | 7 (ATL, CLE, IND, PIT, WAS, LV, CHI) | 16 in 48 games |
| Games decided by one score (8 or fewer) | 11 of 16 | |
| Games decided by 3 or fewer | 5 (CLE, IND, PIT, WAS, BAL) | |
| Winners that were outgained | 7 of 15 with full box data |
Against the spread and over/under counts use the consensus closing line. Minnesota at Tampa Bay closed with Minnesota a short spread favorite, although at least one book had Tampa as a slight moneyline favorite; count Tampa as the favorite and favorites were 8-8 straight up.
Five storylines that matter
1. The market overpriced quarterback downgrades
Three games this week turned on a quarterback change the market had already moved hard for:
| Team | QB situation | Market move before kickoff | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington | Mariota for the injured Jayden Daniels | Line moved from about SEA -4 to SEA -8.5 at the close | WAS won 33-31 outright |
| Chicago | Keenum for the injured Caleb Williams | Line moved about 5 to 6 points, from CHI -1.5 to a CHI +3.5 close | CHI won 27-7 outright |
| Atlanta | Penix back from ACL surgery, replacing the Weeks 1 and 2 starter | Line moved about 2 to 3 points toward ATL, closed ATL +4.5 | ATL won 35-14 outright |
Mariota went 19 of 31 for 183 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Keenum went 24 of 34 for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns, added a rushing score, and became the oldest player in Bears history to run one in. Penix was 18 of 25 for 256 yards.
Our read: one week is not a rule, and three results do not prove the market is systematically wrong about backups. What they do show is that a quarterback downgrade the whole world already knows about is rarely an edge by itself. By kickoff the price usually reflects it, and sometimes it overshoots. The better question each week is not "is the backup worse?" (he almost always is) but "has the line moved more than the gap between the two players is worth?"
2. Turnovers are writing the standings
Winners won the turnover battle in 10 of the 15 games with full box score data, lost it in 3 and broke even in 2. The most extreme cases:
- Washington won while being outgained 437 to 258. Seattle turned it over three times, including a fourth quarter interception returned for a touchdown. Sam Darnold threw for 379 yards and 4 touchdowns and lost.
- Las Vegas won 35-27 in New Orleans despite being outgained 381 to 340. The Saints gave it away four times, all in the fourth quarter. The Raiders are 3-0 and +5 in turnover margin.
- Jacksonville beat New England 35-6 with 315 total yards to the Patriots' 317. The difference was three Patriots turnovers and five Jaguars touchdowns on five red zone trips. Drake Maye now has seven turnovers in three games, the most in the league.
- Buffalo went the other way: five turnovers and still won 24-16, because James Cook ran for 154 yards and the Chargers could not score in the fourth quarter.
Turnover margin is the least repeatable stat in football. Teams that win on it tend to give it back. Keep that in mind when you see the 3-0 records below.
3. Yards do not equal wins (yet)
Seven of the 15 winners with complete data gained fewer yards than the team they beat:
| Winner | Yards (winner vs loser) | Margin | How they won |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEN 30, LAR 26 | 257 vs 482 | -225 | Trailed 16-0 at the half; Talanoa Hufanga pick six in the fourth quarter |
| WAS 33, SEA 31 | 258 vs 437 | -179 | +3 in turnovers, including a defensive touchdown |
| CLE 21, CAR 18 | 259 vs 360 | -101 | Late Deshaun Watson touchdown and two point conversion |
| LV 35, NO 27 | 340 vs 381 | -41 | +3 in turnovers |
| NYG 12, TEN 7 | 238 vs 262 | -24 | Four field goals, no offensive touchdowns |
| MIN 23, TB 16 | 230 vs 243 | -13 | Punt return touchdown, two long field goals |
| JAX 35, NE 6 | 315 vs 317 | -2 | +2 in turnovers, perfect in the red zone |
Matthew Stafford threw 55 passes for 390 yards in Denver and lost. The Rams led 16-0 at halftime, Denver scored 30 in the second half, and Stafford's two interceptions (one returned for a score) decided it. The Broncos are 2-1 with an offense that still ranks in the bottom 10 by efficiency.
4. The run game came back
After two weeks dominated by passing, several games were decided on the ground:
- Atlanta outrushed Green Bay 242 to 17. Robinson carried for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Drake London caught 9 passes for a career high 194 yards. Green Bay lost its home opener for the first time since 2012.
- Buffalo: James Cook, 24 carries, 154 yards, 1 touchdown.
- Pittsburgh: Jaylen Warren, 17 carries, 127 yards, as the Steelers beat Cincinnati 30-27 behind 292 passing yards from Aaron Rodgers.
- Detroit: Jahmyr Gibbs scored three times (two rushing, one receiving) and forced eight missed tackles in a 31-24 win over the Jets.
5. Kickers and close finishes
Eleven of sixteen games were one score games, and five were decided by three points or fewer.
- Baltimore 34, Dallas 31 in Rio de Janeiro. Tyler Loop hit a 56 yard field goal with one second left, set up by a 27 yard Lamar Jackson completion to Zay Flowers. Jackson was 15 of 20 for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns.
- Indianapolis 19, Houston 17. A 53 yard field goal in the final half minute ended the Colts' nine game losing streak and left the Texans 0-3.
- New York Giants 12, Tennessee 7. Four field goals, no Giants touchdowns, and a Cam Ward interception at the goal line late. The Giants are 2-1 anyway.

Standings snapshot
| AFC | NFC | |
|---|---|---|
| 3-0 | Buffalo, Kansas City, Las Vegas | Minnesota, San Francisco |
| 0-3 | Houston, LA Chargers, Miami, Tennessee | Tampa Bay |
Best point differentials: SF +48, JAX +46, KC +38, CHI +36, LV +34. Worst: MIA -50, GB -35, LAC -32, TEN -22, HOU -21.
Only a handful of teams in the modern era have started 0-3 and reached the playoffs. For Houston and the Chargers, who both carried 9.5 win totals in the preseason, the hole is already deep.
Stock up, stock down
Stock up
- San Francisco. The best offense in football by efficiency, with Purdy playing at an elite level. The concern is the injury list: Nick Bosa is out for Week 4, and Mike Evans, Trent Williams and Dre Greenlaw all left this game.
- Jacksonville. +46 point differential and strong on both sides of the ball. The one caution: a +4 turnover margin is helping.
- Atlanta. The first two weeks belonged to a different quarterback. With Penix back, the team looked like the one people expected in the preseason.
- Chicago. A backup won by 20 on Monday night. The Bears' +36 point differential is fourth best in the league.
Stock down
- Philadelphia. 2-1 but 0-3 against the spread, minus five in turnovers, and beaten by 20 by a 38 year old backup. The Eagles are still priced like a contender. The play on the field says otherwise.
- LA Chargers. 0-3 with one of the four least efficient offenses in the league. This is not bad luck anymore.
- Green Bay. Outrushed 242 to 17 at home. 0-3 against the spread with an offense in the bottom eight by efficiency.
- New England. Maye's seven turnovers are the headline, but the defense also slipped badly in Jacksonville.
- Tampa Bay. 0-3, the least efficient offense in the league, and now an undrafted rookie at quarterback for at least three weeks.
The regression watchlist
These are the teams whose records look better than their underlying numbers. They are not automatic fades; the price has to be wrong too.
| Team | Record | Why we are skeptical |
|---|---|---|
| Las Vegas | 3-0 | +5 turnover margin, below average offense by success rate. Opponents have combined for one win. Kansas City comes to town in Week 4 |
| Minnesota | 3-0 | Elite defense, but an offense near the bottom of the league and +4 in turnovers. Justin Jefferson's ankle is a question |
| Denver | 2-1 | Bottom 10 offense. Outgained by 225 yards in Sunday night's win |
| NY Giants | 2-1 | Won Sunday with four field goals. Lost Brian Burns (ACL) and starting QB Jaxson Dart for the season |
| Cleveland | 2-1 | Negative point differential (-17) and one of the lowest offensive success rates in the league |
And the reverse, teams that have played better than their records: Arizona covered in San Francisco and scored 30; the Jets have a positive point differential at 1-2 and Geno Smith just completed 84% of his passes in Detroit.
What Week 3 taught us for betting
- Do not bet the injury headline, bet the price. Everyone knew Keenum, Mariota and Penix were starting. The only question that matters is whether the line moved too much or too little. This week, it moved too much.
- Scoring is volatile week to week. 49.4, then 40.4, then 47.3 points per game. Overs and unders are almost dead even for the season (23-25). A slate of all unders, or all overs, is one big bet on the league environment, not sixteen independent ones.
- Favorites win, the spread still works. Favorites are 32-16 straight up this year but 23-25 against the spread. There is no blanket "back the dog" or "back the favorite" angle yet.
- Turnover driven records are the most likely to reverse. Las Vegas, Minnesota and Denver are the names to watch as their schedules get harder.
- Key numbers still decide spreads. Detroit won by exactly 7 as a 7.5 point favorite. Five games were decided by three or fewer. Being on the right side of 3 and 7 is worth shopping for across books.
- Three weeks of data is still a small sample. Every efficiency number in this piece comes from fewer than 200 plays per team. Treat them as a signal to investigate, not a conclusion.
Injury and quarterback news heading into Week 4
- Tampa Bay: Mayfield (dislocated right thumb) out at least three weeks. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels starts against Green Bay.
- Chicago: Caleb Williams (hamstring) unlikely. Keenum or Tyson Bagent against the Jets; no decision announced.
- Washington: Jayden Daniels (elbow) expected to practice in London; status for Indianapolis undecided.
- NY Giants: Jaxson Dart out for the regular season; Jameis Winston starts. The team acquired J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota.
- Buffalo: Josh Allen took a hit to his left knee late; early reports say not structural and he is expected to play.
- Miami: De'Von Achane, torn ACL, out for the season.
- San Francisco: Nick Bosa (calf) ruled out for Week 4. Evans (ribs), T. Williams (stinger), Greenlaw (quad) being monitored.
- Minnesota: Justin Jefferson, ankle sprain, Week 4 status unclear.
- Philadelphia: Jalen Hurts was evaluated for a concussion Monday and cleared to return.
Week 4 games to watch
Lines are the market as of Monday afternoon, September 28, and will move. Kickoff times are Mexico City time.
| Game | Kickoff (CDMX) | Spread | Total | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PIT @ CLE | Thu 18:15 | PIT -2.5 | 38.5 | Two 2-1 teams winning on thin margins |
| IND @ WAS (London) | Sun 7:30 | IND -3.5 | 47.5 | If Jayden Daniels plays, Washington is worth several more points on a neutral field |
| GB @ TB | Sun 11:00 | GB -3.5 | 39.5 | Line swung about 5 points and the total dropped 7 on Mayfield's injury. Same question as this week: too much? |
| NYJ @ CHI | Sun 11:00 | CHI -2.5 | 42.5 | Keenum or Bagent, and the spread sits right below the key number of 3 |
| MIA @ MIN | Sun 14:05 | MIN -10 | 38.5 | Minnesota's defense against the league's least efficient offense, now without Achane |
| KC @ LV | Sun 14:25 | KC -5.5 | 48.5 | The real test of the Raiders' 3-0 start |
| DEN @ SF | Sun 14:25 | SF -2.5 | 46.5 | Denver's comeback kids against an injury hit San Francisco without Bosa |
| DET @ CAR | Sun 18:20 | DET -3.5 | 50.5 | Detroit games have gone over the total in all three weeks |
Survivor corner: the biggest favorites of Week 3 to fall were Seattle (-8.5) and Green Bay (-4.5). For Week 4, the market's safest favorites are Baltimore at home against Tennessee and Minnesota at home against Miami (both around 84% to win once the bookmaker margin is removed). Baltimore projects as a big favorite again later in the season, which makes Minnesota the more efficient use for many entries.
Method: final scores and box score data checked against at least two independent sources. Closing spreads and totals are the US consensus close. Efficiency figures (EPA per play, success rate) come from public play by play models through Week 3. This is analysis, not a guarantee: past results do not predict future ones. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
