NFL Week 6 Full Analysis: Quarterback Roulette, Round Three

Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson are out, Denver won Thursday on 168 yards of offense, and the market is pricing backup quarterbacks again. The full Week 6 board, five storylines that matter, and every game broken down before Sunday.

Publicado el 17 de octubre de 2026

Saturday update (October 17, after Friday's final injury reports). Lamar Jackson is out; Tyler Huntley starts in Cleveland and the line is down to Baltimore -3 to -3.5 with a 39.5 total, so the "Jackson timing" angle in storyline 2 is off the table. Saquon Barkley is also out for Philadelphia (Carolina -3 to -3.5). Caleb Williams is questionable after a full week of practice; Penix has no designation. The Giants' two starting tackles and Abdul Carter are questionable, as are Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara. A.J. Brown is questionable pending activation by Saturday afternoon. DJ Moore and Ed Oliver are questionable for Buffalo; Rashee Rice and Kansas City LT Josh Simmons are out. Pittsburgh added DK Metcalf as questionable with an illness. Indianapolis added TE Tyler Warren as questionable. Washington and San Francisco post final designations Saturday. Lines since Friday: Chicago at Atlanta total up to 51.5 to 52.5, Kansas City down to -7.5, Buffalo -4.5, Pittsburgh at Tampa total down to 38.5 to 39.

The short version

Week 6 opened with the strangest result of the season. Denver beat Seattle 17-14 in overtime on Thursday night while gaining 168 yards to Seattle's 353. Bo Nix threw for 107 yards. Denver won because Seattle turned it over three times and Sam Darnold went 6 of 19 for 47 yards with two interceptions under pressure. Denver is now 4-2, and its record is one of the clearest cases in the AFC of a team winning beyond its football.

The Sunday story is the same one as the last three weeks: quarterbacks. Jalen Hurts is out with a blood clot in his calf, and the Philadelphia line swung five points, from Eagles -1.5 to Panthers -3.5. Lamar Jackson has not practiced all week and reports point to Tyler Huntley starting in Cleveland. Baker Mayfield is not ready, so Tampa's undrafted rookie starts a third straight game. Going the other way, Caleb Williams and Michael Penix Jr. were both full participants Thursday, and the Chicago at Atlanta line has made a complete round trip (Atlanta -1.5, then Chicago -3, now Chicago -1.5).

Our standing rule after five weeks: a quarterback change the market has already priced has not been an edge in either direction. Priced backups have beaten the number more often than not this season. That rule gets its biggest test yet in Philadelphia.

Byes: Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami, Minnesota.

Denver led 14-3 at the half, gained 30 yards after it, and won on a 53 yard field goal in overtime. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 12 passes for 134 yards and did not score. Thirty one total points: the game went well under the 40.5 close.

Our Thursday card went 1-2 and lost about 0.78 units. The Best Bet (Seahawks -2.5) lost outright. Darnold's passing yards under 224.5 lost because Seattle threw 51 times chasing the game. Dobbins under 50.5 rushing yards won (41). The Seattle thesis was right about the football (Seattle outgained Denver by 185 yards) and wrong about the result, which is exactly what turnovers do to a three point spread. That is not an excuse; it is the reason we keep the side bets small. The touchdown guide had 2 of 7 listed players score (Dobbins and RJ Harvey), with Smith-Njigba, our first choice, held out of the end zone.

What it changes: Denver is 4-2 with a -11 point differential after Thursday, and it just won a game it lost by every measure except the scoreboard. It goes to the top of our regression watchlist (below).

Five storylines that matter

1. Philadelphia without Hurts: the biggest number of the week

Jalen Hurts was ruled out on Wednesday with a superficial blood clot in his calf, and there is no timeline for his return. Tanner McKee makes the third start of his career (the first two were Week 18 games). Saquon Barkley did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. DeVonta Smith practiced on a limited basis Thursday for the first time since Week 3. Lane Johnson has retired.

The market moved about five points on the side (PHI -1.5 to CAR -3.5) and three on the total (41.5 to 38.5), the lowest total of the week. Carolina comes off its bye with a top 8 offense by efficiency (0.07 EPA per play, 6.1 yards per play) and Bryce Young at 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Our read: five points is at the top of what the market has charged for a starter to backup change this season, and Philadelphia's offense was already 30th by EPA with Hurts (-0.19, 37.0% success). In other words, the market may be pricing the name more than the drop. But this is exactly the trap our rule describes. The case against Philadelphia is real too: Carolina is missing both starting corners (Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve) and its left tackle, yet Philadelphia's receivers are hurt, so the obvious way to attack that secondary may not be available. We are not betting against a priced backup, and we are not betting on one just because he is priced.

2. Lamar Jackson's ankle is setting the Cleveland line

Jackson has not practiced since the ankle sprain on October 4. Coach Jesse Minter says he could start without practicing, but reports point to Huntley as the more likely starter. The line has followed the reports almost tick for tick: BAL -3.5 at the open, -5.5 on Wednesday after a report of a "realistic chance" he plays, back to -3.5 or -4 when he missed practice again. One source had 87% of moneyline bets on Baltimore early in the week.

Huntley won in Atlanta in Week 5 (24 of 32, 201 yards, 2 TD, plus the game winning one yard run in overtime). Cleveland's offense is the matchup the Ravens want: 37.1% success rate (30th), 30.6% on third down, 45.5% red zone touchdowns, and 19 sacks allowed, the most in the league.

Our read: the current number is a Huntley number. The edge, if there is one, is a timing edge: if Jackson is active on Sunday and a book is still dealing -3.5, that is a mispriced line, not an opinion. If Huntley starts, -3.5 to -4 looks about right. The caveat: a quarterback who has not practiced for two weeks and plays on a sprained ankle is not the 2026 Jackson who had a 52.3% team success rate, so even "Jackson active" is not worth the full four or five points.

3. The Chicago at Atlanta round trip, and a total that went the other way

On Monday the market priced Williams back and Penix doubtful: Chicago -3. By Thursday both quarterbacks were full participants and the spread was back to Chicago -1.5. The total did not come back. It rose from 47.5 to 51.5 (some books 50.5, prediction markets as high as 53.5), and one source has 87% of tickets and 86% of money on the over.

Two numbers to hold against that total. The under is 4-1 in Chicago games this season. Chicago turns 42.9% of red zone trips into touchdowns. Against it: by one charting source, Atlanta has run a league high 71 outside zone carries at 6.5 yards a carry, Chicago allows a 50% success rate against that exact concept (3rd worst), and Bijan Robinson has 580 rushing yards at 5.7 a carry.

Our read: a four point total move driven mostly by one side of public money is the kind of number we want to price, not follow. Williams has thrown only 55 passes all season, still has to pass stress tests, and on Friday described the hamstring as torn rather than strained. The caveat is Atlanta's run game: if Robinson gets 25 carries against that defense, 51.5 is reachable without either quarterback doing much.

4. Dallas brings the worst defense in football to Lambeau

Dallas allows 0.16 EPA per play (32nd), a 120.5 opponent passer rating (worst in the league), and has not intercepted a pass all season. Green Bay just put 31 on Chicago with Jordan Love throwing for 367 yards. The line flipped to Green Bay and the total sits at 52.5 to 53.5, among the highest of the week.

But look at Green Bay's offense without the Chicago game. It converts 27.6% of third downs, its run game is at -0.33 EPA per rush, and Josh Jacobs is on the Commissioner's Exempt list. Micah Parsons will not play (not cleared to practice) and Javon Hargrave is out for the season with a torn Achilles, which weakens the defense that is supposed to slow Dallas. The forecast is clear with 12 to 15 mph wind.

Our read: the story the market is telling is "Love against the worst secondary in the league." The story the season is telling is that Green Bay's offense is bottom half by efficiency and moves the ball through the air or not at all. Dallas comes in on 10 days of rest after playing Thursday of Week 5. We want the price on the Green Bay team total and the full game total before taking a side.

5. The low totals, after a Thursday that stayed under

Four Sunday totals sit at 41.5 or below: Carolina at Philadelphia (38.5 to 39), Pittsburgh at Tampa (39.5), Baltimore at Cleveland (40.5 to 41.5) and the Chargers at Kansas City (40.5 to 42.5, down from 43.5). Thursday's game finished 31 against 40.5.

The Chargers total is the clearest example of the market already doing the work. Justin Herbert has been sacked 17 times and has thrown an interception in every game, the offensive line is missing Rashawn Slater (injured reserve), Joe Alt and Kayode Awosika (neither practiced), and the Chargers have finished under in four of five games. The total has fallen two to three points this week.

Our read: same warning as Week 4. "Bad offenses, so under" is already in these numbers. Week 5 was bimodal (seven games at 40 or fewer, six at 55 or more), and a card that stacks four low totals is one bet on league scoring, not four bets. If there is an under worth playing, it needs something the market has not priced: wind in Tampa (forecasts range from 14 to 18 mph with gusts) is the one candidate.

Game by game

"Early read" is a direction we are investigating, not a pick. Picks come with prices on Sunday morning, from two Mexican books and the US consensus, and only when a number clears our edge threshold.

Houston Texans (1-4) vs Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1), London, Sun 07:30 CDMX

Line: JAX -2.5, total 42.5, JAX 56.6%. Implied: 22.5 to 20.

Jacksonville stayed in London after beating Philadelphia on a 57 yard field goal at the gun; Houston is on its third road trip in four weeks. Jacksonville loses left tackle Anton Harrison to injured reserve (Walker Little starts, with 31 career starts at the position), and Houston's best answer is Will Anderson Jr., who is on the injury list without a clear designation. Marvin Harrison Jr. arrives from Arizona by trade and "will play," per his new coach, but had 5 catches in four games for the Cardinals and has had one week to learn the offense. Houston is without RB David Montgomery and S Jalen Pitre.

Models: three published projections give Jacksonville 61% to 67%; prediction markets have 57%. The question: Jacksonville allows 2.9 yards per carry and Houston averages 3.4; can Houston score without a run game against a defense that allows touchdowns on a third of red zone trips? Early read: the models sit above the market on Jacksonville, but the market moved toward Houston all week, and Jacksonville's left tackle change is exactly the kind of news models are slow to price. No lean. What would change it: Anderson Jr.'s status.

Baltimore Ravens (4-1) @ Cleveland Browns (3-2), Sun 11:00 CDMX

Line: BAL -3.5 to -4, total 40.5 to 41.5, BAL 64.5% to 65.5%. Implied: 22 to 19.

See storyline 2 for Jackson. Beyond the quarterback: edge rusher Trey Hendrickson returned to full practice after missing two games, center Cam Jurgens was limited (concussion protocol) and WR Rashod Bateman did not practice Thursday. Cleveland's DTs Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. and RB Quinshon Judkins were on early week injury lists; check Friday's designations. Clear, 56°F, 12 mph wind.

Line: CAR -3.5, total 38.5 to 39, CAR 62% to 63%. Implied: 21 to 17.5.

See storyline 1. Carolina's run defense allows 5.4 yards per carry, the worst in the league, which matters only if Barkley plays. Philadelphia has allowed 300 or more passing yards in each of its last two games and comes back from London on a three game losing streak.

Models: two projections at 63% to 64% Carolina, matching the market. One model still had Philadelphia at 69%, but its page showed no injury designation for Hurts, so we discard it. Early read: no lean on the side. The total at 38.5 already assumes Philadelphia cannot move the ball; Carolina's 27.3 points allowed per game is the reason we are not rushing to the under either. What would change it: Barkley. A healthy Barkley against the league's worst run defense is worth more to this game than McKee's arm.

Models: 54% to 57% Chicago in three projections; one projects a 26-26 tie. Early read: the total, not the side. A 4 point rise on 87% of tickets is a number to test, and Chicago allows 6.2 yards per play, which argues the other way. Atlanta is 2-1 with Penix and 0-2 without him. What would change it: Williams's stress test. If he is ruled out, every number on this game moves.

New Orleans Saints (1-4) @ New York Giants (3-1-1), Sun 11:00 CDMX

Line: NO -1.5 (one book NYG -1), total 45.5, NO 50.7%. Implied: 23.5 to 22.

A true pick'em that has changed favorite several times this week. The Giants' injury report is the story: both starting tackles (Andrew Thomas, Jermaine Eluemunor) and edge rusher Abdul Carter did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, and Brian Burns is on injured reserve. New Orleans has its own problem: WR Chris Olave missed both days with an illness. The Giants come home from a 27-27 overtime tie in Washington; their kicker went 2 of 5 on field goals in it.

Two backup tackles against any pass rush is how a Winston game turns ugly, and he has thrown for 326 yards and 3 touchdowns in each of his last two games, so the variance runs both ways. New Orleans allows a 73.5% completion rate during its three game losing streak.

Correction to earlier reports: New England's TreVeyon Henderson (ankle) and LT Will Campbell (knee) both left the Week 5 win hurt but practiced on a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday; reports say Campbell will miss "some time," though his coach would not give a timeline, and Caleb Lomu is the next man up. A.J. Brown was limited in his return window from injured reserve and is a game time call ("There's a chance," per his coach). CB Christian Gonzalez was upgraded to full practice Thursday. Seven is the second most common margin in the league, and the Jets at +7.5 against a quarterback with 7 interceptions and a possible backup left tackle facing 17 sacks' worth of pass rush is worth pricing; at +7, it is not. The caveat is history: the Jets are 2-18 in their last 20 games in Foxborough.

Baker Mayfield did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, and Jalon Daniels is expected to make his third straight start, on 10 days of rest after winning in Dallas. Tampa's defense is a real unit (4th in EPA per play allowed, 2nd against the run by yards per game), and S Antoine Winfield Jr. is still out with a rib fracture. Early read: that is reverse movement on both numbers, which usually means bigger bettors on Tampa and the under. Add an east northeast wind forecast at 14 to 18 mph and this is the low total we will price hardest. The caveat: Tampa allows a sack on 11.3% of dropbacks (30th) and T.J. Tennessee has scored 58 points in five games (11.6 a game, 31st in EPA per play) and gained 187 yards last week against Houston. Indianapolis has its own warning lights: it allows 6.2 yards per play (among the most in the league), is -6 in turnovers, and Daniel Jones has 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Jones (ankle) was a full participant both days; RT Jalen Travis was limited Thursday. The line opened as a -3.5 lookahead before Week 5.

Indianapolis is not good enough on a per play basis to be a confident touchdown favorite, but Tennessee is the lowest scoring offense in football. Any interest is in the Titans only at +7 or better, and only small. One analyst projection (23-19) lands inside the number; one model lands exactly on it (26-19).

Line: LAR -12.5, total 51.5 to 52, LAR 85.4%. Implied: 32 to 19.5.

The biggest spread of the week. Arizona traded Marvin Harrison Jr. to Houston, RB Jeremiyah Love did not practice Wednesday or Thursday (ankle), and two starting offensive linemen are on injured reserve. Its pass defense is the second worst in the league by efficiency (0.33 EPA per dropback allowed, behind only Dallas) and has given up 31 or more points in four straight games. The Rams have holes too: they play on a short week after Monday's overtime loss, LT Alaric Jackson serves a one game suspension, Myles Garrett stays on injured reserve, and their kicking game failed twice on Monday night.

Double digit spreads are where the market is most efficient, and the Rams are 2-3 because close games got away from them, not because they cannot cover big numbers against bad teams. Line: BUF -4.5 (a few books -5.5), total 53.5, BUF 67.4%. Implied: 29 to 24.5.

Buffalo won 37-34 in overtime in Los Angeles on Monday night and plays again Sunday afternoon. Early read: the short week is already in the 1.5 point move. The total is the highest of the week, the over has hit in seven straight meetings, and the money is on the under: that disagreement is worth pricing. Buffalo's run game leads the league in efficiency (0.13 EPA per rush, 13 rushing touchdowns) against a Las Vegas offense that cannot run (-0.26 EPA per rush).

Los Angeles Chargers (0-5) @ Kansas City Chiefs (4-0), Sun 14:25 CDMX

Line: KC -7.5 to -8.5, total 40.5 to 42.5, KC 78.0%. Implied: 25 to 17.

See storyline 5. Kansas City comes off an early bye with Patrick Mahomes (knee) a full participant; Rashee Rice (hamstring) did not practice and his coach said it "could be a week, could be two." Tyquan Thornton is on injured reserve. The Chargers' secondary is also thin: Derwin James and Donte Jackson did not practice.

QBHerbert: 937 yds, 5 TD, 7 INT, 17 sacksMahomes: 1,037 yds, 9 TD, 2 INT

Models: 75% to 86% Kansas City. Early read: book shopping. Half the market has -7.5 and half has -8.5; at -7.5 a Kansas City win by exactly 8 (24-16, say) cashes, at -8.5 it loses. The caveat: Andy Reid is 8-11 against the spread after a bye, playoffs included, and the Chargers defense is genuinely good (-0.10 EPA per play allowed).

Dallas Cowboys (2-3) @ Green Bay Packers (3-2), Sun 18:20 CDMX

Line: GB -1.5, total 52.5 to 53.5, GB 52.1%. Implied: 27.5 to 26.

See storyline 4. CeeDee Lamb was a full participant Wednesday and Thursday. Green Bay is 10-1-1 against Dallas since 2009, and Love has 6 touchdowns in his last two games against them.

QBPrescott: 1,381 yds, 9 TD, 3 INTLove: 1,408 yds, 10 TD, 3 INT

Models: 56% to 65% Green Bay. Early read: the third down and red zone rows are the whole game. Dallas converts and finishes; Green Bay does neither, but now faces a defense that lets everyone convert. Our current instinct is that the market is pricing Green Bay's Week 5 more than its first four weeks, but we will not have a number until we see the team totals. The caveat: Green Bay's defense is top 8 by EPA even after losing Hargrave, and Dallas's offense has never faced a defense this good on the road.

Washington Commanders (1-3-1) @ San Francisco 49ers (5-0), Mon 18:15 CDMX

Line: SF -7.5, total 51.5, SF 77.6%. Implied: 29.5 to 22.

Jayden Daniels was a full participant Thursday and will play in his elbow brace. Washington's receivers are the problem: Stefon Diggs did not practice and Terry McLaurin was limited. San Francisco is short too: Deebo Samuel is out for "at least the next couple of games," Dre Greenlaw lost his appeal and serves a one game suspension here, Mike Evans did not practice, and Nick Bosa did not practice Thursday (the team is "hoping" he plays).

QBDaniels: 459 yds, 3 TD, 0 INT, plus 203 rushing yds, 2 TD (3 games)Purdy: 1,196 yds, 13 TD, 2 INT, 3 sacks taken (fewest)

Models: 75% to 83% San Francisco. Public data conflicts (one source has 86% of spread money on San Francisco, another 75% of money on Washington). Early read: the red zone mismatch (best offense against the worst defense inside the 20) is the strongest single matchup fact on the board, but it is also the most visible one. With Samuel, Evans and possibly Bosa out, -7.5 is a full price. No lean until Saturday's final report. Washington allows touchdowns on 83.3% of red zone trips, the worst rate in the league.

Survivor corner

If your pool locks at Sunday kickoff, these are the options by fair win probability (moneyline with the margin removed):

TeamOpponentFair win %Share of public picks (one source, early week)Note
Ramsvs ARI85.4%28.2%About 7 points safer than anything else, and the most popular pick
Chiefsvs LAC78.0%10.2%Second safest; off a bye, against an 0-5 team. High future value
49ersvs WAS (Mon)77.6%12.8%Save for later if you can; Monday pick also blocks a fallback
Patriotsvs NYJ74.3%18.2%Second most popular; the Jets defense is better than its record
Coltsvs TEN73.9%14.5%Flagged as a trap by one survivor analysis; Indianapolis allows 6.2 yards per play

Our read: the Rams are the efficient pick for most entries; the gap to the next option is large and the matchup (the second worst pass defense in football by efficiency) is real. In a very large pool, Kansas City is the strongest contrarian alternative if you have not used it. The short week and the Rams' special teams are the risks.

How we will approach Sunday

  1. Wait for Friday and Saturday news. Jackson, Barkley, the Giants' tackles, Williams's stress test and Bosa all move numbers. Last week waiting was worth more than any forecast.
  2. Shop the key numbers. Jets +7.5 (not +7), Titans +7, Kansas City -7.5 (not -8.5), Baltimore -3.5 (only if Jackson plays). Half a point on the right side of 3 or 7 is worth more than most opinions.
  3. Price the totals that the public moved: Chicago at Atlanta (up 4) and Buffalo at Las Vegas (money on the under, history on the over). Treat the four low totals as one position at most.
  4. No quota. Thursday's Best Bet lost on the scoreboard while winning the box score. We keep sizing small on sides until the closing line value says we are good enough to size up.

The Sunday betting card, with prices from two books and every pick graded against the close, publishes Sunday morning.

Method: lines are the US consensus as of Friday midday ET, October 16, cross-checked against several public odds pages; fair win percentages remove the bookmaker margin from consensus moneylines. Efficiency figures (EPA per play, success rate) come from one public play by play provider, through Week 5. Other team stats come from public box score databases. Projections are published model outputs; we cite their range, not one model. Injury news is through Thursday's practice and will change. This is analysis, not a guarantee: past results do not predict future ones. Bet only what you can afford to lose. 18+.
